Last week, I asked ChatGPT for help with a work problem. It confidently gave me an answer that sounded perfect. I spent 20 minutes following its advice before realizing the AI had just... made it all up.

  • You're under time pressure and might not fact-check every response.

7 Prompt Engineering Methods to Reduce Hallucinations

1. Force Explicit Source Citations

The single most effective method: require the AI to cite its sources and explicitly state confidence levels.

❌ Before:

"Write a bash script to backup a database."

✅ After:

"Write a bash script to backup a PostgreSQL database. For each command, cite the official PostgreSQL documentation or indicate if you're uncertain. If you use a flag or option, verify it exists in PostgreSQL 15."

  • Forces the model to "check itself" against known documentation patterns
  • Makes hallucinations visible (it can't cite a source for made-up info)
  • Gives you a clear audit trail to verify claims

2. Use Chain-of-Thought Prompting

✅ After:

"What's the maximum size of a Kubernetes ConfigMap? First, explain how ConfigMaps store data. Then, describe any size limits in the etcd backend. Finally, state the limit and whether it's a hard cap or soft recommendation. If uncertain, say so."

3. Add Self-Verification Steps

Make the AI rate its own certainty for each claim. This surfaces low-confidence hallucinations.

"List the top 5 causes of Kubernetes pod crashes. For each cause, provide: 1) the issue, 2) how to diagnose it, 3) your confidence level (high/medium/low). If confidence is below high, explain why."

  • Forces internal calibration of response quality
  • You immediately know which parts to verify
  • Discourages confident-sounding guesses

Putting It All Together

You don't need to use all 7 methods in every prompt. Start with method #1 (source citations) and method #7 (confidence scores)—those two alone will catch 80% of hallucinations.

For high-stakes technical work (production deployments, security configs, compliance docs), layer in chain-of-thought and self-verification.

The goal isn't to eliminate all hallucinations—that's impossible with current LLMs. The goal is to make hallucinations visible so you can catch them before they cause problems.
